In this article you can find some of the 2008 guidelines recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Having these tests done regularly will help prevent diabetes complications. These tests are recommended to be done every year.

Annual Tests

  1. Blood lipids
Check your blood lipid levels. Here is a guideline to help you read the test results:
LDL cholesterol: less than 100 mg/dl.
Cholesterol HDL: In men more than 40 mg/dl
Cholesterol HDL: In women more than 50 mg/dl
    Triglycerides: Less than 150 mg/dl.

Have this test done more often if you start a new cholesterol medication. To improve results, reduce fat consumption, especially saturated fat and trans fats; Be more physically active.

A diabetic patient has a high risk of cardiovascular disease because loose high levels of glucose in the blood vessels can damage the arteries. Damage in the coronary arteries, the ones wrapping the heart, can lead to a heart attack. That’s why, early detection of diabetes is essential to prevent damage to the blood vessels.

    Normal
    : Less than 30 ug/mg
    Low: 30-299 ug/mg
    High: More than 300 ug/mg.
You need a urine sample for this test. when the results are high it could mean the kidney is damaged. Ask your doctor if you need to take medication for the kidneys.

  3. Complete eye exam
If you feel a problem in your eyes go to the eye doctor right away. In fact, don't wait until you detect something abnormal to go to the doctor. Again, early detection can prevent major problems.

  4. Feet and leg nerves check up
If you are diabetic or at risk of becoming one, one of your objectives is to have good blood circulation in your feet and legs and eliminate the feeling of cold in your lower extremities. Your doctor can check the temperature and level of sensibility in your feet and recommend the right steps to follow.

  5. Nutrition education for diabetes
Ask your doctor for a referral to a Registered Dietitian. Many insurance companies cover the expense and the dietitian can advice you on the proper diet to fight diabetes.
